6 Months In: Thoughts on Running a Moving & Storage Business
Admittedly we planned to write this a month ago, when we hit our official 6 month anniversary of GoodGuys Concierge Moving & Storage. But July was crazy and as with pretty much every month before it, our blog output was pushed to the backburner. And of course, our blog output has been zero. This is literally the first blog we’ve written in the now 7 months that we’ve been in operation. Shame on us. Hopefully we’ll start to crank out some content as we continue to hone our processes and become more and more efficient.
So what have we learned in the last 7 months? What’s been going on? Well we could probably write about 100 blogs on this journey, so we’ll give you the highlights. For starters, the general premise of starting a home services company, in which we go above and beyond for our customer, show up on time, in uniform, introduce ourselves and shake the customer’s hand, and do what we say we’ll do, for how much we said we’d do it, seems to be working. On the one hand, that’s an amazing feeling, to know that people want what we have to offer. It’s an amazing feeling to know that what we are doing is actually kinda working. On the other hand… it’s not exactly shocking that doing the right thing by the customer and providing a high quality service in an industry whose standard is near the floor ends up stirring up some interest. But nonetheless, it’s a cool feeling.
Hiring is really hard. Hiring is also probably the most important part of our whole business. In order to execute on our vision of going above and beyond for our customers, bringing joy to peoples’ moves, and alleviating stress, we have to have the best people going out, being face to face with the customer, and actually delivering on those promises. And because the moving industry doesn’t exactly have a stellar reputation, we can’t just hire any ol’ mover. We want the best of the best. La crème de la crème. And that quality of person is hard to find. We’ve made mistakes, and we’ve learned a lot. But in order to be the best, you have to have the best people, and that is a big challenge that we are still figuring out.
The anxiety of having no jobs booked is so real. Starting off the month with no jobs on the books is an incredibly uncomfortable place to be at. And as we’ve grown, with that anxiety also comes an entirely new anxiety, and one that is perhaps our biggest fear. Let me explain. Early on, we were just happy to land a job. And we were worried about not getting enough jobs. Because not having enough jobs means this business doesn’t work. And if this business doesn’t work, then we have failed, and that sucks. Flash forward a few months, and now an even bigger fear has started to creep in. Because we have been fortunate enough to get jobs consistently, we have hired full-time guys. And they are awesome. We genuinely think they are the best at what they do. More on that in a second. But with full-time guys comes the necessity to give them full-time work. And thus, our biggest fear - what if we don’t have enough work for our guys? What will they do? We are providing their livelihood, and if we can’t provide these jobs, we can’t provide them their livelihood, and they in turn can’t provide for their families. And that is really scary. That is our biggest fear - that we can’t provide for our guys, so they can’t provide for theirs.
On a more positive note, our team is the best. Like actually, I think they are the best. Stack them up against any moving team in Atlanta, and I like our chances. Not only do we have guys who take great pride in their craft - and make no mistake, moving is a craft, an art even. And if you don’t believe me, you have been hiring the wrong movers. But they also genuinely enjoy talking to the customer, getting to know them, hearing about their life. We have learned that moving is a very vulnerable, intimate experience - multiple guys are in your home, and you have no choice but to interact with them. So those guys better be able to communicate well, and be interesting to talk to. And our guys are. Our team is the best, and we take great pride in them, mainly because they take great pride in themselves.
There are many more lessons that we will try to communicate more often, but those are the ones that really stand out. It’s crazy to think it’s been over half a year since we started our moving and storage business. It’s crazy to think we are now in the back half of 2025. And yet, we are just getting started. We have so much to do, so much to learn, so much that we know we need to do but we haven’t done any of it. We are finally taking the time to get our ducks in a row - standardize policies and procedures, put out consistent social media content, put out consistent blogs, create a repeatable sales process rather than relying on word of mouth (word of mouth is awesome, but it can trick you into thinking you’re good on the sales front - you are not, your team is just really good at what they do), implement operational guidelines, automate manual tasks, and on and on the list goes. We’re excited for what the future holds. We’re even more excited at the prospect of serving more customers, raising the standard of the service industry as a whole, and proving that you can succeed in business by being kind and doing the
